MICHAEL MILLER, GENERAL MANAGER
Mr. Mike Miller began his supply chain management career with Roadway Express as an
industrial engineer in Nashville, TN and continued to progress through the Roadway
organization as the Division Engineer for the Southeast Region based in Atlanta. Following
his experiences in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research with Roadway Express,
Mike joined Georgia-Pacific in Atlanta, Georgia as the Manager Process Improvement
Logistics. In this role, he oversaw the industrial engineering aspect of logistics for
one of the largest paper and forest products companies in the world. Following his
experience at Georgia-Pacific, Mr. Miller began working with Norfolk Southern as a
consultant in the development of the Mixing Centers in 1997 to design the processes and
procedures for the handling of Ford Motor Company's finished vehicle network. Following
his work on the Mixing Center Network, Mike went to work for Norfolk Southern in the
Industrial Engineering and Operation Research group continuing to work with the mixing
centers and providing to consulting services to NS customers. Mr. Miller left Norfolk
Southern in 1999 to pursue a position with a start up Internet company called Derivion.
He was involved in the start of this company that started the initial forays into Internet
billing. During his time with Derivion, Mike held the position of Director of Channel
Development where he oversaw relationships with all key stakeholders in the Internet
supply chain necessary to offer the Internet billing service. Mike advanced to the
position of Vice President of Strategic Development at Derivion and oversaw all strategic
planning initiatives within the corporation. In 2001, Mr. Miller returned to Norfolk
Southern to lead Modalgistics, a new business venture started by Norfolk Southern to
provide consulting, technology and operations support to multi-modal industrial
manufacturing companies. Mike has led sustained growth at Modalgistics and has positioned
the company as a major player in the multi-modal consulting business. He holds a BS in
Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University and a MS in Business
Management from North Carolina State University. He holds a Supply Chain Certification
from the University of Tennessee and is a member of the Council Supply Chain Management
Professionals and the Atlanta Logistics Roundtable and a founding Board Member of the
Atlanta Chamber of Commerce - Logistics Innovation Council.
ALAN P. BROWN, MANAGER NETWORK OPTIMIZATION
Mr. Alan Brown has been involved with supply chain improvement for over 19 years. During
his time as a warehouseman with an automobile supplier, Mr. Brown designed warehouse
layouts to facilitate growth (7,000 sq ft up to 40,000 sq ft) and efficient operations.
From that position, Alan enlisted in the US Army. His duties involved numerous supply
chain related activities culminating into a position that involved the processing of new
recruits during the first 3 days of their enlistment. In an 8 month period, he and 18
others processed 8,000 initial entry recruits and an additional 6,000 individual ready
reservists.
In 1993, Mr. Brown joined Norfolk Southern. After a 6 month stint in the Information
Technology department assisting with a major hardware implementation, he moved to the
Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IE/OR) department. While in IE/OR, Alan
participated in numerous process improvement projects involving dispatching, crew calling,
rail yard operations, automobile facility layout, security process implementation, and
Railroad-Customer interactions. During his time in IE/OR, Mr. Brown developed a
simulation technique where by a proposed facility's operations can be simulated and
tested quickly. He presented this technique at INFORMS in 1996. In 2001, Norfolk
Southern formed the Modalgistics group and Alan assumed the responsibilities of Network
Optimization Manager. In this role he as overseen more than 60 strategic network
optimization studies for internal and external customers. If these studies were combined,
they would represent over $2 Billion in annual transportation spend. Mr. Brown holds a
BBA in Management Sciences and Information Technology from the University of Georgia.
DEMERY HATFIELD, MANAGER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Before joining Modalgistics in 2003, Ms. Demery Hatfield held roles as a software
developer, corporate trainer, and project manager at Norfolk Southern Corporation and
Delta Airlines. Her 13 years of transportation technology experience include Project
Management, Enterprise Data Warehouses, Business Intelligence software, and Website
design, development, and maintenance. Ms. Hatfield has a BS in Mathematics from Auburn
University and an MBA from Georgia State University, a Project Management Certification
from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Supply Chain Certification from the University of Tennessee.
ANDY PIPER, MANAGER SUPPLY CHAIN DEVELOPMENT
Mr. Piper joined Norfolk Southern in 2005 as a Supply Chain Designer after 7 years assisting internal and external clients with their modeling efforts at CAPS Logistics, a premier supply chain and transportation modeling software company. As part of the Modalgistics team, Andy has been involved in site selection, economic development, supply chain optimization, and transportation planning projects. His expertise has been drawn upon for Norfolk Southern's multi-phase Crescent Corridor project, co-loading and consolidation efforts for multiple automotive manufacturers, as well as fleet optimization studies for numerous clients. Prior to CAPS Logistics, Mr. Piper worked at Lotus Development for 5 years. He has a BS in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Andy also holds transportation and supply chain certificates from both the University of Tennessee and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
JOHN HOOVER, MANAGER SUPPLY CHAIN SOLUTIONS
Mr. John Hoover started with North American Van Lines in 1974 and worked in various
dispatching and planning positions with the High Value Products division. Mr. Hoover
continued working with NAVL and in 1980, relocated to Southern California and managed
the West Coast High Value Products warehouse servicing southern California. John
oversaw a four fold increase of business in the high tech, communications, office
products and medical distribution business. He returned to NAVL's corporate headquarters
in Fort Wayne and continued his supply chain management experience with NAVL in a
series of progressive positions including: Manager of Planning, Manager of Contract
Pricing, and National Account Manager working with companies such as IBM, HP, and
Xerox. He managed the start up of NAVL's Forward Air network that provided air port
to air port surface transportation to the air freight forwarding community. Recognizing
his planning and operational expertise, John was named project manager for the
mainframe rewrite of NAVL's operations systems. Mr. Hoover continued his wide breadth
of supply chain management experience in industrial engineering and as a manager in
NAVL's customized logistics operations. When NAVL was sold by Norfolk Southern, John
joined NS to lead the introduction of Manager of Rail Services inside of assembly
plants at Ford and General Motors. During this period of time he was also responsible
for managing Norfolk Southern's JIT rail facilities. These rail/truck transfer
facilities handle more than 400 truckloads of auto parts daily for transfer to rail
cars with JIT delivery to automotive assembly plants across North America. In 2001,
he joined Modalgistics as Manager Supply Chain Solutions and is a lead project manager
for Modalgistics on many fleet and customized logistics consulting projects. Mr.
Hoover has a BS from Manchester College and an MBA from St. Francis University. He has
also received a Supply Chain Certification from the University of Tennessee.
DOUG COLE, MANAGER SUPPLY CHAIN MARKETING
Mr. Doug Cole began working for Norfolk & Western Railway in Roanoke, VA in 1984 having previously worked as a store manager in the retail grocery industry for 12 years. Doug's railroad experience includes clerical positions in rail shops and yard offices, as well as Customer Accounting and Payroll Accounting. In 1988, Doug moved to Atlanta to work as a Supervisor in Payroll for Norfolk Southern and was responsible for the mailing of company payrolls and freight bills. In 1995, Doug was promoted to Manager, Mail Services and was responsible for mailrooms in three headquarters cities and all corporate mailings in conjunction with the Norfolk Southern Print Shop. In 1999, Doug moved to Transportation Services and later to Car Distribution, where he was responsible for providing the timely distribution of equipment for customers in the open and covered hopper group and also the automotive multilevel group. In Car Distribution, Doug helped drive improvements in car utilization and reduced dwell time in each of those areas. In 2006, Doug joined Modalgistics, bringing with him 22 years of railroad experience in various departments. Mr. Cole holds a BS in Management from Liberty University and an MBA from Kennesaw State University, and is certified as a Six Sigma Greenbelt by Six Sigma Canada.
