NORFOLK, VA -- Norfolk Southern Railway Company today announced the opening of a new Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer (TBT) terminal in Augusta, Ga. Quality Terminals has been selected to operate the facility.
TBT facilities handle the transfer of bulk products, such as plastic pellets and liquid sweeteners, from one mode of transportation to another. Bulk transfer permits off-rail shippers and receivers of varied commodities to combine rail's long-haul efficiencies with truck's convenient door-to-door delivery.
Quality Terminals, a division of Quality Carriers, the leading provider of bulk transportation services in North America, will direct terminal operations. Quality Terminals also operates Norfolk Southern TBT facilities at Columbus, Ohio, and Spartanburg, S.C.
"Quality Terminals is excited to operate the Augusta terminal and believes the new site will serve an emerging market and manufacturing base in Georgia, South Carolina and northern Florida," said Michael Hagen, general manager, Quality Terminals, Quality Carriers.
"The Augusta facility will enhance Norfolk Southern's network of 29 existing TBT terminals located in 16 states and allow shippers to increase their distribution options east of Atlanta and throughout the South," said Mike Webb, manager of MODALGISTICSSM, Norfolk Southern's supply chain and distribution services group.
The new terminal has 44 car spots with separate tracks for food products and can handle both dry and liquid bulk products. The facility features paving, security, full fencing, lighting, 24-hour access and truck scales. All TBT terminals are open facilities and allow haulage by qualified motor carriers.
Located at the intersection of Taylor Street and Mechanics Street in Augusta, the terminal has convenient access to Interstate 20.
Norfolk Southern's other TBT facilities are located in Atlanta; Baltimore; Buffalo, N.Y.; Charlotte, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Chicago; Cincinnati (2); Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio (2); Dalton, Ga.; Detroit; Edgemoor, Del.; Elizabethport, N.J.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Jersey City (Croxton), N.J.; Louisville, Ky.; Miami; Mobile, Ala.; Paterson, N.J.; Petersburg, Va.; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh (2); Spartanburg, S.C.; Whiting, Ind.; Willis, Mich.; and Winston-Salem, N.C.
