New Norfolk Southern Steelnet Facility Serves Greater Atlanta Area
ATLANTA - Norfolk Southern Railway Company and Collier Metals LLC, a provider of coil
processing and distribution services to the metals industry, today opened the first Class
I SteelNet facility in the Atlanta area.
SteelNet facilities handle high-value steel
and metals products, combining the economics of rail delivery with the just-in-time
convenience of truck delivery at 35 locations on the Norfolk Southern system. The
88,000-square-foot Atlanta SteelNet facility, operated by Collier Metals, provides
coil-processing capacity up to 72 inches as well as warehousing, processing and storage.
Other features include two 250-ton cranes, 15 car spots with five under roof, inside
loading and unloading and climate-controlled storage with dew point monitoring. The
facility is adjacent to Norfolk Southern's rail yard and offers easy access to
Interstates 75, 85 and 20.
The Atlanta facility is the first SteelNet location to integrate shipment management
(ModalViewSM) and inventory management (ModalManagerSM) for shippers and receivers of
metals products through Norfolk Southern's MODALGISTICSSM supply chain management group.
MODALGISTICS helps customers choose the most cost-effective mix of transportation modes,
supply sources and warehousing for their distribution needs.
"The new Collier facility offers customers premium service options by combining a
rail-served Class I coil processing facility with complete inventory visibility through
MODALGISTICS' supply chain management systems," said MODALGISTICS President David Lawson.
"Steel producers now can ship coil and other steel products via Norfolk Southern rail
directly to Atlanta while steel consumers within 100 miles of Atlanta can receive
products by truck delivery direct from Collier Metals."
Caye Wire & Steel Inc. of Atlanta, a manufacturer of welded wire mesh, is the first
customer to use the Atlanta facility.
"The new SteelNet facility and the services of MODALGISTICS will allow us to concentrate
on our core business," said Bruce Ashbrook, operations manager for Caye Wire & Steel.
"We look forward to working with Norfolk Southern and expanding our business in the
Atlanta area."
